Red Rock is a bit of an unusual property in some of the best ways: It’s a locals casino, but built to be modern and fresh, with a picturesque view of Red Rock Canyon and built close enough to the Vegas strip to be relatively accessible by a quick drive or Uber ride.

I had the opportunity to visit it a couple of years ago during one of my Vegas trips, and was impressed by the balance struck by the property. Here’s an overview.

Casino Floor

The casino floor is sizable, with a great mix of old and new machines, similar to many other casino properties that have been around in Las Vegas. There is a heavier weight of Video Poker on the floor, including a solid amount of full pay options, a nod to the locals goal of the property.

There’s a solid selection of table games there, featuring standard favorite as Blackjack, Craps and Roulette, and more modern carny games like Ultimate Texas Hold ‘Em. The table minimums ran the gamut but you could find some value tables on the floor, again appropriate for a locals casino.

On my visit I bounced between older and newer slot machines throughout the floor, and had a great run, getting regular bonuses and big wins. I saw quite a few people playing the full pay video poker machines as well.

Since I visited, they restructured the comp program, which we’ll talk about shortly, so things may have shifted a bit, along with other more standard changes caused by COVID-19 protocols.

Hotel Rooms

Red Rock features modern rooms that match the casino floor in modern, upscale look and feel, with great views of the Red Rock Canyon and the Las Vegas Strip. Getting comp rooms here will certainly be more difficult than other Stations Casino properties being the flagship of the group, but you can’t go wrong with the hotel if you’re evaluating options.

It doesn’t hurt that even the basic rooms are over 500 square feet, feature giant flat screen TVs, and marble bathrooms with soaking tubs.

Comp Program

The Boarding Pass is the card for the Stations Casinos group of properties. You earn one point per dollar wagered on slot machines, and one point per two dollars wagered on electronic table games and video poker.

It takes 1000 points to have $1 worth of comps, so it’s half as generous as Caesars Rewards for comps earnings, but they regularly have point multiplier days which can drive the point counts up much faster.

Status credits are earned at a separate rate: 3 status credits per $1 in slots, and 1 status credit per dollar on video poker. Status credits are what earn you your tier status.

Last fall I played a single session of bingo and a bit of slots at another Stations Casino and I was tiered up to their Gold level, so it’s not hard to move up in status at their properties.

As a locals program, it has a six month tier cycle for maintaining status, tough for those who don’t visit Vegas twice a year at minimum, but of course easier for those who live nearby.

Other Notes

I ate at their buffet pre-COVID during my visit, and found it to be among the better values. I was able to take advantage of a coupon in American Casino Guide book that got me half off, and it was a strong buffet spread.

There are a number of good restaurant options on property, a bowling alley, and a movie theater, among other activities, designed to make it more family friendly. It to some degree can be a one-stop entertainment shop for locals who want to get out for an afternoon.

But for those who visit regularly Las Vegas, it could also offer an opportunity to stay off the beaten path a bit and still have a strong property to enjoy, with a card that links to other nearby properties as well.
