Triple Double Diamond: More Volatile, Bigger Potential

As part of my talking about mechanical slots here on the site, I previously covered the classic Double Diamond. I’ve also covered Triple Double Diamond Free Games, a 20-line low volatility mechanical slot.

Arguably more volatile than either of those two, Triple Double Diamond is more volatile than Double Diamond as a single line game, and more volatile than the 20-line game that spreads out the volatility with all the lines, allowing false wins to provide some additional, and frequent, payouts.

Triple Double Diamond by IGT pay table

One look at the pay table of Triple Double Diamond vs. Double Diamond helps underscore the reasons for the additional volatility:

  • A second color of 7s, which pays less than the red 7s, and mixed 7s which pay even less than either of the two.
  • The addition of a Triple Diamond symbol, which can multiply pays by 3 with one of them or 9 with two of them. The Double Diamond and Triple Diamond can appear together, one each, for a 6x multiplier.
  • The three Triple Diamond symbols yields a new higher top payout. Interestingly 2 coins pays better than 1, and 3 coins better than 2, for that payout only.

The increased multiplier chances and the additional symbols overall is a general sign of more volatility, even if the games both payout the same.

For whatever reason, my last visit at the casino I saw the Triple Double Diamond machine next to the Double Diamond I was playing, and decided half way through my money in the Double Diamond machine to shift over.

Not long after I sat down, I noticed on one of my spins the first reel took longer to come to a stop than normal. Then the second one did similar, and it was a Triple Diamond. It immediately clicked the game was doing a tell that something unusually good was happening. And it was when that second Triple Diamond symbol landed, offering a $540 payout on a 75 cent bet. That’s good for my biggest win year to date.

This is effectively the third best prize you can win on the game, aside from the mixed Double/Triple Diamonds and the three Triple Diamonds, and not a bad haul for a 75 cent machine!

As pay tables goes this is still a pretty simple machine, but definitely boosts things for those looking for a bit tougher a game while still being pretty good overall. I continue to get good mileage out of the mechanical reel slots and will be continuing to give them some play at the casino!
